About Earl Pletsch

During the late 1950’s through to the early 1980’s Earl Pletsch ran Mt Seymour Ski Area through his dedicated passion for skiing and his desire to share this with everyone in the Lower Mainland. All from his hip pocket, Earl oversaw all aspects of grooming, lifts, rentals and more, and Mt Seymour became one of the busiest operations in North America. Even Ski School taught more than 60% of the people on the Lower Mainland to ski.

Mr Pletsch focussed his marketing efforts on school-aged children, their families and community centres. He maintained an affordable pricing strategy for his “working class” family ski area, which allowed large numbers of skiers to access and to be introduced to joys of the sport.

This rugged, straight-talking man of the mountain demonstrated great kindness for others and a strong community-minded approach in his efforts to give the public a good experience. He would often pick up skiers on his way up the hill and then go back for more, always asking them and others how he could improve the service at Mt. Seymour.

Snow Farmer Extraordinaire:

Earl Pletsch and his crew were kept busy carefully packing and grooming snow, much as a farmer would tend his fields. Earl would often feel the snow to get valuable clues about keeping the mountain in top condition. He had a tremendous knowledge of when and when not to groom, as well as where and when to ‘store’ the snow for later use in the spring or during those lean years (1976-77).

Night Skiing Pioneer:

Earl Pletsch was one of the first ski operators to introduce night skiing in North America. Today, night skiing is extremely popular at ski resorts across North America.
